The 2010 International Conference on Pulmonary Circulation
The 2010 International Conference on Pulmonary Circulation was held from June 2nd to 5th at the Clarion Congress Hotel in Prague.
The main focus of the conference was to bring together a group of globally recognized experts and practicing European clinicians to discuss the most up-to-date methods and indicate future aims within the field of venous thromboembolism, chronic pulmonary hypertension and other related areas. A special effort was made to assure that the Baltic and Balkan States, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Ukraine and of course Czech Republic all had representatives within the audience.
In addition to clinical issues, a special session presenting different national solutions to the most important problems related to providing care and the reimbursement of treatments in orphan diseases, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, had been arranged.
The contracting authority of the conference was the Czech Society of Cardiology, whose representative Professor Michael Aschermann acted as Conference President.
The Conference has been endorsed by the ESC WG on PC and RV function as well as ERS WG 04.04 on PC and PV diseases.
The Conference was held under auspices of the former President of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, as well as other significant individuals. Unfortunately, Havel wasn´t able to personally participate at the conference, however he had sent his greetings to all participants who were present via video message.
There were 550 persons registered for the conference, 475 participated in person, of which 72% were men and only 28% women.
Participants came from all over the world, both from Europe and from overseas. Most of the participants were from Poland and Czech Republic and a large number of delegates were also there to represented Spain and Germany.
The scientific portion of the program took place during the first two days and the following morning. During the entire event 71 lectures and 4 satellite symposiums by United Therapeutics, Bayer Schering Pharma, Actelion, GlaxoSmithKline had been carried out. In addition, the poster session had tallied up 51 exhibited posters this year.
Financial support for the event had come from several companies. Platinum partners were United Therapeutics and Bayer Schering Pharma, and Golden partners were Actelion and Lilly. Other partners and exhibitors included GSK, Pfizer, Boehringer Ingelheim and Medical Tribune.
During the entire conference we noticed a very high attendance for both lectures and satellite symposiums.
There were two social events arranged for the participants of the conference. First was a "Welcome Drink" reception, which took place in the Meridian Hall of Hotel Clarion along with a live jazz performance.
The second social event was as a gala dinner in the representative rooms of Prague Castle. A welcome drink was served in the Rothmayer Hall, later followed by a violin concert performed by Pavel Šporcl in the Spanish Hall and last, but not least, a gala reception in the Rudolf gallery and the adjacent corridors had also taken place.
Based on the positive feedback we have received, we are quite convinced that the conference was a huge success, to the satisfaction of all participants.
